Centre for Energy and the Environment

The Centre for Energy and the Environment has been working with government, local authorities and businesses for over 30 years. The Centre’s unique experience has helped organisations reduce their carbon emissions and energy expenditure, and improve environmental performance. Expertise includes energy, buildings, carbon reduction, climate change adaptation, renewables, combined heat and power, district heating, waste, transport and air quality.

With energy prices set to experience unparalleled increases in the coming decades, the Centre’s practical and effective approach is helping organisations meet these economic and environmental challenges.

North Wyke – Rothamsted Research

Formerly part of the Institute of Grassland and Environmental Research, North Wyke has now become a department of Rothamsted Research

Rothamsted Research, North Wyke provides unique research capabilities for the UK. These help to address some of agriculture’s most pressing challenges, for example mitigating and adapting to climate change, protecting natural resources and sustaining the rural economy in grassland dominated regions such as South West England.

The research undertaken at the centre seeks to harness the power of new systems biology approaches. These combine predictive computer modelling, which can make sense of huge amounts of data, with experimentation in the field and in the lab. The result is improved understanding of the complexity of grassland ecosystems and what it means for practical land management food production and environmental goals.

The centre collaborates with scientists from complementary research centres to ensure that the UK has critical capability in research into sustainable management of agricultural landscapes.
