Devon offers a truly diverse cultural and geographical landscape, providing an inspirational environment for creative businesses.

Well known for its vibrant arts, craft and music scene, Devon is also home to a broad spectrum of creative sector businesses including advertising and marketing services, architecture, media services, TV, film and radio, web design, publishing, graphic design, writing and photography.

Devon’s creative enterprises contribution to the local economy has increased by 111% over the last 10 years, making it one of the fastest growing sectors. Over the same period the number of creative businesses has also grown by 43% and employment within the sector has increased by 54%.

High skill levels and qualifications are at the heart of the creative industries agenda. The county offers a talented labour pool with, on average, 33% of the workforce possessing a degree or equivalent qualification, outperforming the UK average of 31%. This figure rises to just over 47% in some areas.

Devon offers world-leading education and academic support for its creative industries, helping to nurture skills and providing a strong framework for continuing professional development. Many of our higher education institutions offer courses tailored to meet the needs of the sector.

In addition to academic support, Devon is home to established creative sector networks. Designed in Devon is a county-wide group of practising creatives. Members include photographers, copywriters, printers and educators. The network supports and promotes Devon’s design-related businesses and their work. The Devon Artist Network promotes visual arts, helping to create opportunities for artists and makers in the county.

The creative sector has high levels of sole traders and freelancers, many of whom require versatile working environments. Devon provides a wide range of incubation and support services to meet the varying needs of these businesses.
