Devon’s natural resources make it ideal for the generation of renewable energy – little wonder Devon has emerged as a leader in renewable energy provision, with the highest number of installed projects in south west England. This presents a huge opportunity to secure investment, create employment and support the growth of the green economy.

The planned 1.5GW offshore Atlantic Array wind farm, sited off North Devon, will act as a hub for the marine renewable sector and its supply chains. North Devon also has 2 large onshore wind projects under construction which will provide a total of over 75MW of capacity.Atlantic Array - proposed view

Devon is home to centres of international research with the Centre for Energy and the Environment located at Exeter University, The Met Office in Exeter and the International Centre of Excellence in Marine Science & Technology in Plymouth. Bicton College’s EaRTH Centre (due to open early 2012), South Devon College’s Energy Centre and Petroc all run courses aimed at meeting the increasing need for diverse green skills.

According to Regen SW, employment in the renewable energy sector rose by an average of 30% in the south west between 2009 and 2010, and business turnover rose by an average of 23%.
