Innovative theatre company inspired by being in Devon

Forkbeard fantasy theatre company is based on the Devon / Somerset border near Tiverton and is currently running a well received exhibition – Theatre of Animation – at London’s South Bank Centre until January 8th 2012. The exhibition features a magical world of interactive fun for young and old, with peepshow boxes, mechanical gizmos, films and cartoons and has received recent rave reviews in both the Independent and the Sunday Times.

Over the years the company has developed its own specialities including performance, animation, film-making and puppet production, currently including a teenage brontosaurus skeleton and a giant crow (Captain Weird).

Forkbeard has been based in Devon for around ten years and runs summer workshops and courses at its studios. Tim Britton, one of the original creators of the company in the 1970s stated in the Sunday Times “It’s set in the beautiful Devon countryside with big windows overlooking a hillside with lovely inquisitive cows…. I don’t think that I could work in an urban environment. Forkbeard wouldn’t have survived as long if we were based in London. The studio is custom-built but it looks like an agricultural barn. We insisted on big load bay doors and lots of light. And we’ve lots of space to have individual workshops. The studio is a wonderful place for the summer schools we run every year – people come for a creative charge”.
