Transport Infrastructure

Devon is an extremely well connected county, with excellent road, rail, air and sea transport links. Exeter International Airport and Plymouth City Airport provide links to other UK airports, including London, as well as a growing number of overseas destinations. Plymouth ferry terminal acts as the heart of sea transport in Devon with ferries operated by Brittany Ferries, with routes to various ports in both France and Spain.

Devon’s mainline rail network not only provides direct commuter links to London and Bristol, but allows a wide range of flexible services across the county and the wider area. Mainline stations in Exeter, Newton Abbot, Totnes, Teignmouth and Plymouth all provide direct routes to the capital, and the coastal route between Exeter and Plymouth includes what is described by many as the one of the best train journeys in the country.

Devon’s Road Network allows easy access to areas within the county, and longer journeys are made easier and more accessible with main arteries including the M5, A30 and A38 Devon Expressway. Exeter and Barnstaple also offer Park and Ride services which help to ease congestion at busy times, and limit carbon emissions. Bus and Cycle routes in Devon are extremely comprehensive with regular bus services running across the county, and a huge number of dedicated cycle routes providing safe and easy journeys for cyclists, as well as a quality urban commuter network.
