With headquarters in Switzerland and locations in over 40 countries over 5 continents, Actavis is one of the world’s leading players in the development, manufacture and sale of first-class generic pharmaceuticals. Founded in 1956 the company grew by an assertive programme of expansion, making more than 20 acquisitions in the past seven years while maintaining strong organic growth. The Actavis Group has more than 10,000 employees around the globe.
Actavis UK has more than 540 prescription medicines available in the UK and over 350 in development giving it one the broadest product portfolios and pipelines in the generic pharmaceutical industry. It also markets a range of consumer healthcare brands including Sominex™ and Cymex™. The company’s success is also a result of the portfolio’s breadth across a wide range of therapy areas including: thyroidism; oncology; diabetes; cardiovascular; analgesics; and the central nervous system.
They are committed to continuing to provide first class generic pharmaceuticals on day one of the patent expiry of the originator medicine.
The Barnstaple site employs over 580 people in the local area, making Actavis one of the largest employers in North Devon. The factory was originally built and opened by Cox Pharmaceuticals in 1979 and has enjoyed an upward trend in production scale, employee numbers, and profits in the 3 decades since.
In 2011 the NDMA’s awards ceremony named Actavis as North Devon manufacturer of the year. Actavis won the overall award for showing “total commitment to the local community and its wider area in its long term investment programme in both capital and people and its strong commitment to social responsibility by way of actively supporting local charities and social projects”.
