In 2005, sitting on Bantham beach in South Devon with her 5 children surrounded by carrier bags, entrepreneur Sally Hurst decided she needed a practical beach bag so she went home and designed one. She named each range after her children, who modeled the bags , as well as providing a message inside each bag, giving the products and company real personality.
The Old Bag Company appeals to yummy mummies by offering a stylish, well made, yet well priced product which is sold through small independent retailers. Its phenomenal success means it has sold all over the country to customers looking for something “new and different”.
Since the first days of beach bags Sally has gained a reputation for designing a quality range of everyday bags and products all at affordable prices, and the Old Bag Company have won numerous awards.
Their Union Jack bag was runner-up in the 2012 Gift of the Year Awards and Sally herself has also won awards as a business women – such as the Women Do Business Programme, Business Woman of The Year Award in 2011. As well as this she is regularly asked to speak at events as an inspirational business women.
As Sally explains though , the fact that her children are now growing up has not hindered the business:
‘My family have been a key part of the story, however seven years on, the children are growing up and we feel it’s time for the company to move on too. I am delighted to say we have achieved this without losing any of the personality of the brand with an exciting new look and bag designs that will carry you through life, whether you are on the beach with the children, or in town with the girls’.
The Old Bag Company has been featured in numerous national and regional magazines and newspapers and also featured on ITV Westcounty, BBC Spotlight, Radio 4 and the Old Bags have even been in The Big Brother House!
